Raising the ocen conservationists of tomorrow

This project is a central pilar of the work of Sana Mare. We visit schools, preschools and other private and public institutions to bring the need for ocean conservation closer to the young generation. The children and adolescents learn about the ocean, why we need it and how we can protect it in an age-appropriate manner.

The children of today are the marine protectors of tomorrow. That is why it is essential to talk to the children in order to achieve a sustainable change. A focal point of this program is marine litter, but other issues like overfishing, ocean acidification, coral bleeching etc. can be addressed too. After the classroom session we go out and collect civilization garbage from a coast or shoreline (where possible and appropriate). In the moment we can only offer this program in Germany. But we are planning to offer our children- and school-program in other countries as soon as possible.

Campaign against single
use coffee cups

In Germany, 2.8 billion disposable coffee cups are used every year. Many of these cups are not disposed correctly after use. They are thrown on the ground from where they are blown into rivers and washed into the ocean. Thus the single use cups become a problem for the ocean. Here the economy must take responsibility for putting an end to the threat of the marine ecosystem by disposable cups. Taking responsibility would be pretty easy. The use of disposable cups is not necessary because there are already alternatives in the form of returnable cups. We are running an online petition in Germany. This petition is addressed to the biggest sellers of coffee to go. We demand the immediate and full abolition of disposable cups. So far we have collected more than 140.000 signatures. We are in contact with some of the recipients of the petition to make sure they notice the will of the consumers. If you want to support this campaign, please sign our petition.

Coastal Cleanups

It is estimated, that about 8.000.000 metric tons of plastic are washed into the ocean every year. There it causes huge damage to nature. Birds confuse it with food or nesting material. They die from the plastic in their stomach or get caught in nets and the like. In the sea it becomes microplastic and enters the food chain. Roughly 1% of the plastic in the ocean comes from the European Union. While this number sounds fairly small, it sums up to 8.000.000 kg per year. And of course it is not only the plastic, that enters the ocean and exposes a threat to the ecosystem. Other types of garbage need to be added to the 8.000.000 kg of plastic. In summary, large amounts of civilization garbage can be found on beaches and shores in Europe. On our beach cleanups every person finds in average 10 kg of rubbish per hour. With our coastal cleaning events we can not solve the plastic crisis or clean the ocean. But we can raise awareness for the issue and give our best to reduce the marine litter as much as possible. All our coastal cleaning events are funded largely by the sale of bracelets, made from recycled fishing nets. Fishing nets are a very common type of civilization garbage in the ocean. We thus produce our bracelets from fishing-nets as a statement against ocean pollution. For every bracelet, that you purchase, we promise to remove at least 2 kg of garbage from a european beach, coast, or shoreline.

The ocean is fascinating and complex. For those who don't have the chance to whitness the beauty of the under water world personally, we are happy to bring the ocean to you. Ok, we can not really bring the ocean, but we can bring some of the stories, secrets and images. No matter if you want to learn something about the ocean in the climate system, plastic pollution, sharks or other aspects of the ocean and the marine ecosystem. We will visit you with the talk, you would like to hear. To this end we work together with experts of the varied aspects of the ocean.

Corona Aid Cleanups
in Kenya

We help people in Kenya who are in financial need due to the corona crisis. The aid money is not a present, but is paid as an expense allowance for the collection of rubbish from water bodies. We combine poverty reduction and environmental protection with the project.

What is this project about?

The corona crisis is increasing unemployment, poverty and hunger worldwide. People who live in poor conditions and earn money only through casual jobs are often particularly hard hit by the economic consequences of the corona pandemic. In Kenya many people live in poverty. The consequences of the corona crisis endanger the livelihoods of the poor population. Already before the corona crisis we carried out cleanups in Kenya and expressed our gratitude to the volunteers from poor backgrounds with a warm meal. Due to the corona crisis, poverty in Kenya is increasing further. [ b]We would therefore like to expand our activities in Kenya. Over an initially three-month period, we would like to carry out 60 cleanupsTo this end, we are working with teenagers and young adults who are in need of help. We will pay a fair daily wage as an expense allowance for the cleanup help. The cleanups will, of course, be carried out in accordance with the prescribed and necessary measures to control the pandemic.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

The aim of the project is to help people in Kenya through the difficult time of the corona crisis and at the same time to implement our association's purpose - to reduce the littering of waters. Recipients of financial aid will be about 7 teenagers and young adults who live in poverty and have got into additional difficulties due to the corona crisis. The selection of the aid recipients is made by a project coordinator on local level, who has already successfully organised and implemented actions for Sana Mare in the past. In order to ensure that the funds are used according to plan and reach those in need, the work is controlled by a person who is not financially involved in the project.

Why would you support this project?

Economic and ecological problems are often closely linked. A sustainable solution can therefore only be achieved if environmental protection and earning opportunities go hand in hand. The economic consequences of the corona crisis hit people in poverty hardest. Now is the time for solidarity with the poor people in Africa. This is a great opportunity to combine financial support with active environmental protection. By supporting the project, people in need benefit as much as nature .

How will we use the money?

A cleanup with seven participants costs about 9,000 Kenya shillings. That is equivalent to about 80€. The money is used to pay for transport and travel costs, protective masks and disinfectants, gloves, garbage bags, waste disposal fees, insurance and a fair daily wage.If we receive less than the target of 4.800€, we reduce the amount of clean-up work or the number of people in the team. If we receive more, we will increase the number.

Bildungsprogramme für Kinder
und Jugendliche

Hier lernt die kommende Generation von Meeresschützern

Dieses Projekt ist eine zentrale Säule der Arbeit von Sana Mare. Wir besuchen Schulen, Vorschulen und andere private und öffentliche Einrichtungen, um der jungen Generation die Notwendigkeit des Meeresschutzes näher zu bringen. Die Kinder und Jugendlichen lernen in altergerechter Weise das Meer kennen, warum wir es brauchen und wie wir es schützen können.

Die Kinder von heute sind die Meeresbeschützer von morgen. Deshalb kann ein nachhaltiger Wandel nur von und mit den Kindern entstehen. Ein Schwerpunkt unserer Bildungsarbeit liegt auf der Vermüllung des Ozeans. Es können aber auch andere Themen wie Überfischung, Versauerung, Korallenbleichen usw. behandelt werden. Nach der Unterrichtsstunde gehen wir hinaus und sammeln Zivilisationsmüll von einer Küste oder einem Ufer (wenn möglich und angemessen).

Im Moment können wir dieses Programm nur in Deutschland anbieten. Aber wir planen, unsere Kinder- und Schulprogramme so schnell wie möglich im Ausland durchzuführen.

Kampagne gegen
Einweg-Kaffeebecher

In Deutschland werden jährlich 2,8 Milliarden Einweg-Kaffeebecher verwendet. Viele dieser Becher werden nach dem Gebrauch nicht korrekt entsorgt. Sie werden auf den Boden geworfen, von wo aus sie in Flüsse geweht und in das Meer gespült werden. So werden die Einwegbecher zu einem Problem für den Ozean. Hier muss die Wirtschaft die Verantwortung dafür übernehmen, der Bedrohung des Meeresökosystems durch Einwegbecher ein Ende zu setzen. Verantwortung zu übernehmen wäre ziemlich einfach. Die Verwendung von Einwegbechern ist nicht notwendig, da es bereits Alternativen in Form von Mehrwegbechern gibt.

Wir führen in Deutschland eine Online-Petition durch. Diese Petition richtet sich an die größten Anbieter von Coffee-to-go. Wir fordern die sofortige und vollständige Abschaffung von Einwegbechern.

Bislang haben wir mehr als 140.000 Unterschriften gesammelt. Wir sind mit einigen Empfängern der Petition in Kontakt, um sicherzustellen, dass sie den Willen der Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher wahrnehmen. Wenn Sie diese Kampagne unterstützen wollen, unterschreiben Sie bitte unsere Petition.

Müllsammel-Aktionen

Es wird geschätzt, dass jedes Jahr etwa 8.000.000 Tonnen Kunststoff in das Meer geschwemmt werden. Dort verursacht der Müll einen großen Schaden an der Natur. Vögel verwechseln es mit Nahrung oder Nistmaterial. Sie sterben an dem Plastik in ihrem Bauch oder verfangen sich in Netzen und ähnlichem. Über die Jahre zerfällt das Plastik zu sehr kleinen Partikeln und gelangt in die Nahrungskette. Etwa 1% des Plastiks im Meer stammt aus der Europäischen Union. Diese Zahl klingt zwar recht klein, beläuft sich aber auf 80.000.000 kg pro Jahr. Und natürlich ist es nicht nur der Kunststoff, der in den Ozean gelangt und eine Bedrohung für das Ökosystem darstellt. Zu den 80.000.000 kg Kunststoff kommen weitere Abfallarten hinzu. In Europa findet man darum an Stränden und Ufern große Mengen an Zivilisationsmüll. Bei unseren Müllsammel-Aktionen findet jeder Teilnehmer im Durchschnitt 10 kg Müll pro Stunde. Mit unseren Aktionen können wir die Plastikkrise nicht lösen oder den Ozean reinigen. Aber wir können das Bewusstsein für das Thema schärfen und unser Bestes geben, um die Vermüllung des Ozeans so weit wie möglich zu reduzieren. Alle unsere Veranstaltungen zur Küstenreinigung werden größtenteils durch den Verkauf von Armbändern finanziert, die aus recycelten Fischernetzen hergestellt werden. Fischernetze sind eine sehr verbreitete Art von Zivilisationsmüll im Meer. Jedes Jahr werden ca. 640.000 Tonnen Fischernetze im Meer zurückgelassen. Wir produzieren darum Armbänder aus Fischernetzen als Zeichen gegen die Meeresvermüllung. Für jedes Armband, das Sie kaufen, versprechen wir, mindestens 2 kg Abfall von einem europäischen Strand, einer Küste oder einem Ufer zu entfernen.

Das Meer ist faszinierend und komplex. Für diejenigen, die nicht die Möglichkeit haben, die Schönheit der Unterwasserwelt persönlich zu erleben, bringen wir gerne das Meer zu Ihnen. Ok, wir können nicht wirklich das Meer mitbringen, aber wir können einige der Geschichten, Geheimnisse und Bilder mitbringen.

Egal ob Sie etwas über den Ozean im Klimasystem, Plastikverschmutzung, Haie oder andere Aspekte des Ozeans und des marinen Ökosystems lernen möchten. Wir haben den richtigen Vortrag für Sie und besuchen Sie gerne. Dazu arbeiten wir mit Experten der verschiedenen Fachrichtungen zusammen.

Corona-Hilfe-Cleanups
in Kenia

Wir helfen Menschen in Kenia, die durch die Koronakrise in finanzielle Not geraten sind. Die Hilfsgelder werden nicht verschenkt, sondern als Aufwandsentschädigung für das Einsammeln von Müll aus Gewässern gezahlt. Wir verbinden mit dem Projekt Armutsbekämpfung und Umweltschutz.

Was sind die Ziele und wer ist die Zielgruppe?

Durch die Coronakrise steigt weltweit Arbeitslosigkeit, Armut und Hunger. Die Menschen, die in armen Verhältnissen leben und nur durch Gelegenheitsjobs Geld verdienen sind häufig besonders stark von den wirtschaftlichen Folgen der Coronapandemie betroffen. In Kenia leben viele Menschen in Armut. Die folgenden der Coronakrise gefährden die Existenzen der armen Bevölkerungsschicht. Bereits vor der Coronakrise haben wir Cleanups in Kenia durchgeführt und uns bei den freiwilligen Helfern aus armen Verhältnissen mit einer warmen Mahlzeit bedankt. Durch die Coronakrise nimmt die Armut in Kenia weiter zu. Wir möchten darum unsere Aktivitäten in Kenia ausbauen. Über einen Zeitraum von zunächst drei Monaten möchten wir 60 Cleanups durchführen. Dazu arbeiten wir mit Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen zusammen, die auf Hilfe angewiesen sind. Als Aufwandsentschädigung für die Hilfe beim Cleanup zahlen wir einen fairen Tageslohn. Damit leisten wir einen Beitrag zur Armutsbekämpfung bei gleichzeitiger Reduzierung der Umweltverschmutzung. Die Cleanups werden selbstverständlich unter Einhaltung der vorgeschriebenen und notwendigen Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung der Pandemie durchgeführt.

Worum geht es in dem Projekt?

Das Ziel des Projektes ist es Menschen in Kenia durch die schwere Zeit der Koronakrise zu helfen und gleichzeitig unseren Vereinszweck - die Reduzierung der Vermüllung von Gewässern - umzusetzen. Empfänger von finanzieller Hilfe werden ca 7 Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene sein, die in Armut leben und durch die Coronakrise in zusätzliche Schwierigkeiten geraten sind. Die Auswahl der Hilfe-Empfänger wird von einem Projektkoordinator vor Ort getroffen, welcher bereits in der Vergangenheit erfolgreich Aktionen für Sana Mare organisiert und durchgeführt hat. Um sicherzustellen, dass die Mittel planmäßig verwendet werden und bei den Bedürftigen ankommen, wird die Arbeit von einer finanziell nicht an dem Projekt beteiligten Person kontrolliert.

Warum sollte jemand dieses Projekt unterstützen?

Ökonomische und ökologische Probleme sind oft eng miteinander verbunden. Eine nachhaltige Problemlösung kann daher nur erzielt werden, wenn Umweltschutz und Verdienstmöglichkeiten Hand in Hand gehen. Die wirtschaftlichen Folgen der Coronakrise treffen Menschen in Armut am stärksten. Jetzt ist die Zeit für Solidarität mit den armen Menschen in Afrika gekommen. Dies ist eine große Chance, finanzielle Unterstützung mit aktivem Umweltschutz zu verbinden. Durch die Unterstützung des Projekts profitieren Menschen in Not ebenso wie die Natur.

Was passiert mit dem Geld?

Ein Cleanup mit sieben Teilnehmern kostet etwa 9.000 Kenia Schilling. Das entspricht umgerechnet etwa 80€. Mit dem Geld werden Transport- und Anfahrtskosten, Schutzmasken und Desinfektionsmittel, Handschuhe, Müllsäcke, Müllentsorgungsgebühren, Versicherungen und ein fairer Tageslohn bezahlt.Wenn wir weniger als das Ziel von 4.800€ erhalten, reduzieren wir die Anzahl der Aufräumarbeiten oder die Anzahl der Personen im Team. Erhalten wir mehr, werden wir die Anzahl erhöhen.
